CARRIE

She couldn’t imagine where Ryan might be taking her if it wasn’t back to Arizona. He wasn’t even dressed as she’d come to expect. Instead of a suit, he wore jeans and a pale blue dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to reveal beautifully veined forearms. He wasn’t even wearing a tie.

Although she was desperate to know, she didn’t ask questions about the surprise. The anticipation was too delicious to spoil, and she almost wished Valentina was with them to share it.

Then again, if she planned on being Ryan’s wife in truth, they didn’t need an audience. Maybe that had been part of Valentina’s plan. Now that she thought about it, she didn’t think it likely her best friend had a work emergency at all. It was probably a ploy to give her and Ryan some alone time.

It was definitely something Valentina would have done.

Thinking of Valentina reminded her to thank her best friend for everything. Even knowing their marriage would probably be temporary, she’d gone out of her way to make it special.

Once they were seated in Ryan’s SUV, she asked, “May I use your phone? I’d like to call Valentina and thank her for planning such a wonderful wedding.”

“Sure.” He handed her the device, then added, “I saved her number as a contact. You can use mine until we get you your own.”

“Thank you.” She pulled up Valentina’s contact, then tapped the screen to connect the call. When Valentina answered, she said, “Hi, it’s me. I just wanted to—”

“Hey, chica! What are you doing calling me?” Valentina asked. “You and your handsome husband should still be doing the horizontal tango!"

"Valentina!”

“What?”

Ryan mouthed the word with her and smirked, making Carrie laugh helplessly. “I wanted to thank you for my wedding. I can’t imagine having a better, more special day, and I’m sorry I tried to run off. I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“Don’t worry about it. I know you meant well.” A horn interrupted their conversation. Once it faded, Valentina said, “I’m getting into construction, so I need to let you go. Call me when you get back into town, okay?”

“Sure. Drive safe!”

“I will. See you soon!”

The call dropped, and Carrie wanted to slap her own head. “Shoot. I forgot to ask her how much we owe her for our wedding rings.”

“I… Carrie, I made her return the one she bought for you, and I’ve already made arrangements to pay her back for mine.”

Frowning, she glanced down at her hand. “Okay, but where did this one come from?”

He opened his mouth, then closed it and pulled a cloth handkerchief from his pocket. “It was my mother’s.”

Tears immediately welled and he rolled his eyes, then passed her the folded cloth. “Valentina did the same thing. Why are you both crying over this?”

“I can’t take your mother’s ring!” Carrie wailed. “It’s not right.”

“Honey, she passed away ten years ago, and I never got a chance to give it to her. It’s okay, I promise.”

She scrubbed at her eyes, probably messing up the concealer covering her bruises.
